Getting to Mongolia

How to Get to Mongolia

Chinggis Khan International Airport (ULN)

Located approximately 18 km south of the capital city of Ulaanbaatar (also spelled Ulan Bator).  This international airport is the largest in Mongolia.  It is the home base for the national airlines - MIAT Mongolian Airlines, Eznis Airways, and Aero Mongolia.

The major airlines flying into ULN from other international airports are: Korean Air, Japan Airlines, Air China, and Aeroflot.  However, there may be others, so be sure to check your local airlines.

Trans-Mongolian Railway

The Trans-Mongolian Railway runs directly north-south through Mongolia connecting to the Trans-Siberian Railway in Russia, and running down into Beijing, China.  Thus, you can travel via train from either of these neighboring countries.  For some good additional information and question-answering, check out this link on Lonely Planet

Getting to Your Guesthouse/Hotel in Ulaanbaatar

Taxis are the way to go.  From Chinggis Khan International Airport a taxi into the capital city should cost between 10,000-15,000 tugriks.  The going rate per kilometer is 500 tugriks, but you'll be charged a bit more coming from the airport.  Be sure that your taxi driver turns the mileage counter back to zero before you begin your trip.

If you're coming from the train station, most guesthouses in the capital city will be within 5 km's and you should be prepared to pay the 500 tugrik/km price.  Click here for a list of places we recommend for you to stay in while in Ulaanbaatar.
